Healthy Aging: For Seniors & People Who Care about Seniors

Healthy Aging: For Seniors & People Who Care about Seniors

Dear UNJURY Friends

I was touched by the number of people who read my personal blog post, Senior to Senior.   I told how protein has helped me stay healthy and active.  So, I am trying to communicate more with you all.

Please know that you can always email me directly at Jerome@UNJURY.com. Or call the office and ask for me : )

You all sent quite a few questions about that post. Here are my answers to the most common questions:

I. If protein is so important, why don’t doctors recommend more protein for seniors?

There are some doctors who just don’t focus on nutrition, especially for seniors. But more and more, there is research coming out that says anyone over 40 should get higher levels of protein to maintain muscle and general health. And more doctors are getting on board.

Here’s one very topical example: The doctors in Northern Italy treating people admitted to the hospital for COVID 19 are now recommending higher protein intake, including whey protein supplementation.

They are also recommending multivitamins.

Many of these patients are getting “run down” by the early stages of the infection, and the malnourishment makes things worse. Why not pay extra attention to protein and vitamins now, so that you will be stronger, and better prepared to fight the virus if you must.

II. How much protein do you take each day? What is your personal routine?

I usually get in almost 140 grams of protein per day.

(If you get in 30 grams of high quality, 3 times a day, that is really great, and that is supported by medical research. Whey protein, which is what Unjury uses, is highest in leucine, and high leucine is an important part of the recommendation.)  Here’s what I do:

Breakfast: 5 egg whites plus one whole egg. So about 32 grams protein.

Lunchtime:   usually about 1:00 PM, I get in a chocolate UNJURY protein powder shake in skim milk (21 grams of protein from 1 scoop plus 8 g from the milk = 29 grams protein), or sometimes I do a scoop and a half of Strawberry Sorbet or Chicken Soup Flavor in water (31 grams protein).

Later Afternoon:  When gyms were open, I would swim in the afternoon, and get a shake with 30 grams of protein (a scoop and a half of a chosen flavor of the day in water) immediately when I got back to the car (I use a small cooler with blue ice).  With the gyms closed, I still get in the afternoon shake.  It’s only about 140 calories, and it’s great for killing hunger until a dinner that is sometimes late.

Dinner:  A dinner with a lot of protein, in order of my preference, beef, pork, salmon, or chicken. I usually have about 40 grams of protein. That’s almost 6 ounces of one of those, cooked weight.

III. How do you get that much protein?

For me, it is all about getting into a routine.  I really find it helps to get into a groove. If you like coffee in the morning, as I do, you could also “attach” your protein intake to your coffee groove. Always have a scoop of UNJURY® Chocolate in your first cup of coffee, and that’s a great way to start the day.

IV. How much protein is too much?

Unless you already have serious kidney issues, and you would almost certainly know that, there really isn’t a level that is “too much”.  There isn’t much research support for getting over 30 grams, 3 times per day. I do more because I want to be sure when I do exercise that I get as much benefit, including muscle maintenance and gain, as possible.
