Do You Know Anyone Who is Expecting?
PROTEIN is the most fundamental nutrient that an expecting mom can get. First, expecting moms need protein for themselves to maintain good health and support weight management. Just as importantly, growing babies need protein as well.
Every major bodily system of your growning child is critically dependent on the building blocks provided by protein. From the bones, brain, skin, muscles, fingers and toes, to their digestive, respiratory, and nervous systems, these all play critical roles in developing your babies senses (sight, hearing, smell, and touch) and require protein to do so.
Even the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine recommends more protein for expecting moms. So why don’t most obstetrician practices recommend protein for expecting moms? Until recent years, most doctors were just not taught about nutrition. So they don’t think about it. Recently, a Registered Dietitian we know was expecting. She DID know about protein but she wanted to see what the obstetrician’s practice would recommend, so she asked a question:
- Question: “What should I do when I get hungry?”
- Answer: “Have a Snickers”
What should you do? Spread the word. Please tell anyone you know who is expecting about the importance of getting more high quality protein in their diet for the health of their baby.
