“Can I get what I need from a Drugstore Vitamin?”
It is easy to feel confused about which vitamins you should be taking as a bariatric patient.
Recently someone asked us, “Can I get what I need from a Drugstore Vitamin?”
The answer is No!
Not only are the nutritional values too low for bariatric patients, but the standard of quality testing for some over the counter nutritional supplements is just not good enough – certainly not up to Opurity® standards.
We’ve heard patients mention they are taking Flintstones Complete or Centrum Silver and some are even taking prenatal vitamins.
Those can be convenient, but NONE of them--not even the pregnancy vitamins--meet ASMBS guidelines for bariatric patients – even if you double the dose. In fact, some vitamins like Thiamin and B12, require 8-10 times the amount that is found in a standard over-the-counter vitamin.
Vitamin deficiencies are common, and develop over time. You might not even know that you are deficient until you start having debilitating symptoms. And deficiencies can be hard to correct once they occur.
One patient recently told us, “I took a regular vitamin, and was in trouble after the first month.”
Your post-op nutrition is so important to your long-term health and success. Deficiencies can damage your health permanently, so the quality and nutritional value of the vitamins that you take matter a LOT!
Take the trustworthy vitamin that is made with you in mind.
