Why I Take My Vitamins After Bariatric Surgery
Note from a fellow bariatric patient…
After I had weight loss surgery 10 years ago, a lot of things changed for me—how I eat, how I move, and how I think about food and my body. But one of the most important changes was something I didn’t fully expect: taking vitamins every single day.
Before Surgery
Before surgery, I took a daily multivitamin along with several prescription medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Most of my nutrients still came from food, and my body absorbed them the way it was designed to. But after surgery, that changed. The way my body processes and absorbs nutrients is permanently different now.
How Surgery Changes Nutrient Absorption
I had a gastric bypass, and like with sleeve gastrectomy, the anatomy of the digestive system is altered. My stomach is smaller, and parts of my intestines are bypassed, which means they don’t absorb vitamins and minerals as efficiently. Even with a healthy, balanced diet, I simply can’t get all the nutrients I need from food alone.
That’s why the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) recommends that all bariatric patients take daily supplements for life.
My Vitamin Routine
I follow the guidance from my surgeon and dietitian and take a complete Bariatric Fusion multivitamin specifically formulated for bariatric patients, along with calcium citrate with vitamin D, B12, and iron. These aren’t optional—they’re a vital part of my long-term care.
It’s important to remember that everyone’s needs are different. Depending on your surgery type, medical history, and lab results, your regimen might not look exactly like mine. That’s why I have my bloodwork checked annually—to make sure my nutrient levels are where they should be and to catch any deficiencies or high levels early. Your healthcare team can help personalize a supplement plan that’s right for you.
More Than Just a Pill
Over time, I’ve come to see my vitamins as more than just pills. They’re a daily act of self-care. They protect the investment I made in my health when I chose surgery. They help me stay active, alert, and feeling good.
When I take them consistently, I notice the difference—not just physically, but mentally too.
If You’re Considering Surgery
If you’ve had bariatric surgery or you’re preparing for it, I can’t stress this enough: The vitamins matter. They’re not just something to take when you remember. They’re part of your new lifestyle, just like eating smaller portions, choosing nutrient-dense foods, and staying active.
For me, taking vitamins daily is a small habit with a big impact. It’s how I make sure I’m not just maintaining weight loss, but building a healthy, strong, and sustainable life.
Sincerely,
—Your bariatric friend
