Let's Repeat The Following: Everyone Needs Vitamins and Minerals!
Lately people have been saying that vitamins and minerals do not prevent cancer or heart disease. This is not real “news”. Who believes that vitamins are a “silver bullet against” some disease such as cancer? Rather, the point is that vitamins and minerals are essential for the way our bodies work. There is no dispute about that. EVERYONE needs to take in vitamins and minerals. The Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences developed the DRI’s – Dietary Reference Intakes – which provide the amounts of vitamins and minerals that various populations need – based on age, gender and specific needs women who are expecting. The DRIs are widely recognized by Americans and Canadians in the food and health fields as the accepted source on nutrient reference values for the maintenance of good health.
If they aren’t perfect, they are close. For most individual vitamins and minerals, there are established minimum daily intake requirements – and for some, a maximum safe intake as well. There is well-established science documenting the undesirable health effects when we are deficient in individual vitamins and minerals (and protein too). So, how should we get our vitamins and minerals? Some believe we should only get them from foods – by eating a lot of fruits and vegetables and other foods.
That is a good way to do it – IF you eat enough of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and other foods, perhaps 4 or 5 different ones every day. But we think it is being a bit “ostrich-y” to think that works for everyone. What about the rest of us – the other 99% who don’t have time to:
- Keep track of which vegetables, fruits and other foods contain which nutrients
- Identify an available mix of vegetables to “cover” all of our needs every day or every week
- Know the quantity of what to consume daily
- Keep track of them in your fridge (and freezer) so nothing spoils.
- Fit them into your day; every day; prepare them; washing, cutting, mixing, cooking, etc.
That’s where a good multivitamin multi-mineral comes in. It does provide the vitamins and minerals you need. It does help prevent deficiencies. It does fit into busy (even crazy!) lives today. Here are just a few examples of what Vitamins and Minerals do for you:
Vitamin / Mineral | What It Does | Deficiencies Lead To |
B-12 | Healthy blood cells | Irreversible nerve damage |
Folic Acid | Important role in metabolism | Weakness, fatigue, difficulty with concentration, and irritability |
D | Central processes in almost every cell in the body | Muscle pain, fatigue, chronic kidney disease |
B-1 (thiamin) |
Helps in burning carbohydrates for energy | Negative effects on most organ systems, notably effects on nervous system, including thinking, numbness |
