Get Back to What Works
When patients are frustrated by weight regain, we recommend they get back to what works.
Following surgery, the focus is on meeting protein goals while keeping carbs and total calories low. This works for weight loss, and UNJURY® Protein is one of the best tools for meeting those goals.
As a result, they probably experienced “melting” or very steady weight loss, exactly what all bariatric patients hope to experience.
Over time, new foods are introduced, and they are encouraged to move back to 100% solid foods. This is when some patients report weight regain.
Here’s what we know…
Bariatric surgeons recognize that weight regain is big - even huge problem.
Meeting protein goals each day is a key to healthy, sustainable weight loss. That’s because protein supports healthy muscle, and muscle drives metabolism. “Post-bariatric surgery patients can reach a loss of 25 percent of their preoperative muscle mass by the end of the first year.”1
When patients stop using protein supplements, and try to meet their protein goals entirely with solid food protein, it doesn’t always go well for these reasons:
Some don’t have an appetite for chicken, eggs, salmon, or beef multiple times each day.
Others just don’t digest those foods very well after surgery, so they avoid them.
It’s hard to get in enough protein from food without getting extra fat and carbs.
When they don’t get enough protein, other foods often slip back in, and those foods might lead to weight gain.
Our experience talking with hundreds of patients tells us that keeping UNJURY® Protein in their routine is an important tool for long term success.
Something to think about:
When someone is being treated for high blood pressure, their doctor recommends blood pressure medication, more exercise, a lower sodium diet and stress reduction.
When that patient reaches their goal -- a healthy blood pressure, they don’t stop one or two of those things. The combination is important for helping the patient reduce blood pressure, and all of the tools will be important for maintaining a healthy blood pressure in the long-term.
The same thing is true for weight management. The combination of protein supplements, exercise, weight loss medication or surgery, and stress management helps patients lose weight. So, all of these tools will help them maintain a healthy weight too.
If you have a patient that is struggling, let them know that it’s OK to “Get Back to What Works.” High-quality UNJURY® Protein is a fantastic weight loss AND weight maintenance tool for the long-term.
