Back on Solid Food, Back on Weight Gain

Back on Solid Food, Back on Weight Gain

Regain is an important topic at bariatric surgeon conferences. At UNJURY®, we have talked with too many patients who started gaining when they stopped using protein shakes.

Why does the switch away from protein powder shakes trigger weight gain?

One reason is that patients struggle to meet their protein goals with chicken, fish, eggs, and beef alone. Here’s why:

  • Meat can be harder to digest after surgery, you might not tolerate it 3 x per day.
  • It takes longer to prepare, difficult for a busy lifestyle.
  • It isn’t shelf stable, so it may not always be available in your kitchen.

When patients don’t meet protein goals each day, they may fill calorie gaps with fat or carbs.

Protein Shakes are your weight loss insurance policy.

Using protein shakes in combination with solid protein foods helps you meet your goals so you won’t be as hungry and you will protect lean muscle, which is important to a healthy metabolism.

There is strong medical research that supports getting 90 grams of high-quality protein per day—for everyone over age 40—not just bariatric patients. That’s 30 gramsTHREE times a day.  It is much better to do “30-30-30” than to have an uneven pattern such as 10-20-60”

So, how do you get 90 grams of high-quality protein in your diet in every day? Protein Shakes make it easier.  One shake has 200 calories or less, and 20-30 grams of protein.  They have smaller portions and they’re more affordable!

Solid foods that are high in protein often come with tons of extra calories, and it can be a lot to eat.

UNJURY® makes it easy to get high quality protein in a tasty, convenient, and affordable way --without the extra calories.

Our advice for almost everyone, and I live by this advice (see my blog post), is to drink protein shakes or protein bars at least 2 times a day, and get 90 grams of protein a day, or more, for the rest of your life. That’s almost impossible without shakes.

Protein is Also Like Immune System Insurance.

Getting in good levels of protein is always essential to support your immune system How much protein? We believe that 25-30 grams, three times per day is optimal because it is optimal for a tissue production system in your body called the mTOR pathway.

Personally, for general health, weight management, muscle maintenance and now immune support, I am getting even more protein than that.  If you have questions, email me at Jerome@UNJURY.com.

Take care and stay healthy!
